Takata deadline approaching for new car dealers

Public news

New car dealers are reminded that the deadline is fast approaching where they will not be able to sell a new or demonstrator vehicle that has any affected Takata Airbag Inflators.

Part 2, Section 5(14) of the recall notice states:

“A person must not, in trade or commerce, supply a new Vehicle (or demonstration Vehicle that has not previously been supplied to a Consumer) with an Affected Takata Airbag Inflator in any circumstances after 31 December 2018…”

Regardless of whether the vehicle is under Active or Future Recall, the airbag will need to be replaced prior to delivery to a consumer. We understand that supply of replacement airbags for new vehicles is currently adequate. However, as the deadline approaches there is the potential for a “bottle-neck” situation.

MTA members are urged to be conscious of this deadline and make appropriate stock-holding arrangements.
