Specialist Skills:
  • Utilising the most advanced electronic diagnostic equipment, to diagnose and repair on-board computer-controlled systems, optimise efficiency and performance.
  • Testing and repairing various electrical systems including lighting, instrumentation, ignition, fuel injection, stability control systems and CAN BUS systems.
  • Diagnosing and repairing various components and parts such as engines, transmissions, cooling systems, steering and suspension, and performing advanced diagnostics.
  • All apprentices are trained in Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Electric Vehicle safety to prepare them for the future.
  • Air-conditioning training is included in this apprenticeship, subject to licensing requirements through ArcTick.

As a dual trade technician, there will be no need for your employer to coordinate multiple technicians or outsource specialised tasks – saving them time and money.

EMPLOYER REQUIREMENTS

Apprentices undertaking a dual trade are required to be supervised by an automotive electrical technician and a suitably qualified light vehicle technician. If your employer does not have a qualified automotive electrical technician currently employed, technicians with qualifications in light vehicle technology can undergo the Qualified Technician to Automotive Electrician Program, offered by the MTA Training and Employment. COURSE OUTLINE:

First to fifth-year tables outlining each year's blocks

Year 1- Workshop Introduction, Cooling, Engines and Fuel Systems, Automotive Servicing and Electrical and Soldering

Year 2 - Braking Systems, Wiring Harnesses, charging and Starting Systems and Ignition Systems

Year 3 - Steering, Suspension and Wheel Alignment, Drivelines, Instruments and Warning Systems and Transmissions Management Systems

Year 4 - Emission Control Systems, Spark and Compression Ignitions Systems, SRS and HEV/ BEV Safety

Year 5 - Dynamic Control Systems, Body Management Systems and Air-Conditioning

LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT:

Literacy and numeracy assessment forms part of the enrolment process to ensure individuals have the minimum literacy and numeracy levels. r Funding through the South Australian Department for Education requires a student to meet a minimum level, however, if an individual is below minimum levels, they will be referred to a provider to access a foundation skills course or foundation skills bridging units.

Individuals seeking access to a Certificate II or III subsidised training place or Jobs First Employment Project must demonstrate they are at Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Exit Level 2 in reading and numeracy.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:

Criteria

Students applying for a dual trade apprenticeship at the MTA must meet the eligibility criteria below:

  • An Australian citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Currently living in South Australia.
  • 16 years of age or older.
  • In Year 11 or higher.
  • Willing to commit to a 5-year apprenticeship.
  • Driver's Licence- full-time apprentices must have Ps & school-based apprentices must have Ls.

EMPLOYMENT

At the MTA, we offer two pathways to complete your dual trade apprenticeship:

  • Become employed by the MTA and we will find you a job across South Australia’s metro and regional areas and undertake your training at one of the MTA’s state-of-the-art facilities at MTA Training and Employment, working with new and emerging technologies OR
