AUR32120 Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology



As a Vehicle Body Repair Technician apprentice, you’ll learn how to repair the body of vehicles to better than showroom standard.

You’ll learn how to rectify panel damage using the appropriate tools and techniques to repair steel or aluminium panels without using fillers and prepare a panel ready to accept paint primers and top coats.

MTA trained panel beaters are taught advanced welding techniques including identifying and correcting weld defects and graduate from the MTA with up to nine subjects towards their I-CAR accreditation.

Specialist Skills:
  • Using oxy-acetylene and electric welding equipment to cut and join replacement sections or damaged panels
  • Straightening badly damaged vehicles using mechanical and hydraulic equipment
  • Filling depressions with fibreglass or plastic fillers, filing, grinding and sanding repaired surfaces using power and hand tools
  • Realigning chassis and body frames, and use chassis alignment machines and measuring systems
  • Replacing badly damaged sections with new or second hand panels
  • Remove and replace accident related mechanical items and auto electric components
  • Fitting repaired panels on the framework of the vehicle and refitting body hardware, such as door locks and door trims
  • Removing dents by hammering panels with a plenishing hammer or wooden mallet
  • Removing damaged panels and parts by unbolting or cutting them away
  • Assisting vehicle body builders to build custom designed, specialty or vintage vehicles
  • Assisting with spray painting vehicles

There are two ways you can complete your qualification with the MTA:

  • Become employed by us and we'll find you a host business for you to work for
  • Gain an apprenticeship on your own and do your training at South Australia's most progressive automotive training facility

Delivery mode:

  • On the job training is delivered at your Host Employer
  • Off the job training is undertaken at MTA Group Training Scheme Inc's Registered Training Organisation at Royal Park



Literacy and Numeracy Assessment:
Literacy and numeracy assessment forms part of the upfront assessment of need process to ensure individuals have the minimum levels required by DIS to access the vocational course of their choice or to demonstrate an individual is below minimum levels and therefore requires access to a foundation skills course or foundation skills bridging units.

Individuals seeking access to a Certificate II or III subsidised training place or Jobs First Employment Project must demonstrate they are at Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Exit Level 2 in reading and numeracy.


Recognition of Prior Learning:
