Takata airbag incident in Adelaide!

Public news

An Adelaide woman, Georgia Back, revealed that in June this year, a faulty Takata airbag in her car exploded, leaving her unconscious and her hands filled with shrapnel.

The airbag exploded out of the steering wheel of her year 2000 model BMW without inflating.

Ms Back did have the passenger-side airbag replaced as a result of the mass-recall but said she never had the driver’s side airbag replaced.

Following BMW’s investigation, it was revealed that the car, prior to Georgia owning it, was involved in a crash in 2009, just prior to Georgia purchasing the vehicle from a private seller. The car was a repairable write off, purchased at an auction, repaired and then sold on to her.

Even though the item does not appear to have been under active recall at the time, this is a reminder not to fit any item under current active recall.
