In November, changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme for motor bike riders came into effect. The South Australian Government is now turning its attention to motorcycle training delivered through its Rider Safe program as a way to improve road safety outcomes in the state.
Motorcycle Industry Association SA/NT Chair, Mark Flynn, together with MTA staff recently engaged with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport and other stakeholders to get the review underway. On-road training is emerging as a strong focus, but stakeholders are also being asked to consider a wide range of topics, such as digital hazard perception tests and the theory content delivered.
The MTA believes that the Rider Safe program should be strengthened and that on-road training should be included as part of the reforms. However, our clear message to the Government is that any changes should not become unreasonably expensive or over burdensome for new riders.
