The Motor Trade Association of South Australia welcomes today’s announcement by the South Australian Registrar of Motor Vehicles to refuse registrations for vehicles fitted with Takata ‘Alpha’ type airbag inflators from 1 November 2018.
MTA CEO Paul Unerkov said that the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) was taking the initiative in removing these dangerous airbags from South Australian vehicles.
“The Alpha type airbag inflators pose an immediate safety risk to vehicle owners,” Mr Unerkov said.
“We applaud the proactive steps taken by the Registrar and DPTI to protect South Australian vehicle owners by refusing registration to the approximately 679 affected vehicles believed to be in the state.”
“The MTA strongly encourages vehicle owners to contact their vehicle manufacturer or dealership to check if they are affected,” Mr Unerkov said.
Vehicle owners can check the status of their vehicle by visiting www.ismyairbagsafe.com.au or go their vehicle manufacturer’s website.
