June vehicle and motorcycle registration reports

Public news

There were positives and negatives in the June Vehicle and Motorcycle Registration Reports.

In June, South Australia produced a total (New and Used) of 34,837 registrations. Of note is a 6% decrease year over year with 2,178 less vehicles registered than in June last year which saw 37,015 registrations. There were two less trading days in June in comparison to May and this may have had an impact on sales.

South Australian SUV sales continue to dominate, mirroring the national results with 3,343 registrations in June 2018 compared to 3,117 registrations in June 2017.

Used light vehicle registrations totalled 26,797 which is down 7% on June last year and down 6.3% on May this year, however, as May saw two less trading days than in June, this would have had an impact on sales.

There were 1,438 total registrations for motorcycles in South Australia in June. This is 145 units less than in June 2017. Although we are seeing slightly more dealer to private registrations in the last couple of months, with more being seen in June and up on the previous two years, overall new and used registrations were down year over year by 31% and 3% respectively.

It is positive to see more consumers moving towards licensed dealers for both cars and motorcycles and the MTA will continue to warn buyers of the risks associated with purchasing a vehicle privately.
